Welcome to the Islands

“So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Welcome to The Islander, my new home on the open ocean of the Internet. Assuming you took Mrs. Brown’s sage advice, throwing off those bowlines, catching those trade-winds in your sails, you have now washed up here with me, on a small archipelago of windswept, sun bleached islands, known as Penghu. Or the Pescadores, if you’re feeling all fancy and Portuguese. Let’s face it, the Portuguese haven’t been seen around these parts for a while. However you got here, welcome. And thank you for dropping your anchor here for a little while.

Why have I started this blog? Well, obviously the main purpose it to batter you with a gale of maritime metaphors and nautical niceties, until you’re green and heaving over the starboard rails.

Secondly, I want to provide the curious traveller, be they of the actual, or armchair variety with a treasure map to my island home. Compass bearings, safe harbours, drinking holes etc; a guide to Penghu and its many delights and dangers, sights and secrets. These will come in a series of ‘Penghu Top 5s’, and I hope they prove useful and entertaining to prospective visitors. Or useful, at least. They’re totally subjective of course, my opinions alone. If you disagree, or have other ideas, let’s hear ’em!

Lastly, and most importantly, I want to share my Sun-addled Soliloquies, dreams, observations, photos and general ramblings with anybody who’s kind enough or drunk enough to listen. These sporadic posts will cover a variety of themes, from travel and expat lifestyle pieces to video game reviews, conversations overheard on the beach to surfing tips and the trials of writing a novel, teaching insight, ukulele songs, history, motorcycles, time travel… I get a lot of sun, so obviously, there’s a lot of Sun-addled Soliloquies cookin’ in the noggin’.

So there you are. I’m going for half informational/educational and half self-indulgence. Those proportions may vary. I’d love to hear from anybody who reads, enjoys, hates or just feels incredibly ambivalent about my blog. Please use the comments to speak your mind. Feel free to give me ideas for future topics and posts, questions, tips, criticisms, whatever floats your boat. If you’re also an Islander, on your own personal chunk of rock floating around in the big old blue, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s build an island chain! If you’re planning a visit to Penghu and have any questions, drop me a line. Grammar Police are also welcome, I’m an English teacher, I can take it.

If you like what you read, it would mean the world to me if you’d subscribe and share this blog.

Have a beautiful day.
